While many know Burr for his sarcastic, blunt style of live comedy and iconic Boston accent, the accomplished actor and writer has also successfully ventured into the world of television, showing a side of Burr that few had previously seen. From an inter-galactic criminal marksman to one of the most famous con-man in the Southwest, Burr’s personality has lent itself to several different roles over his decorated career.
From drama, to sci-fi and animated comedy, here are three of Burr’s most notable roles on television.
Patrick Kuby (Breaking Bad)
In the 2008 crime drama Breaking Bad, Burr appears in seasons four and five as Patrick Kuby, the primary henchman of perhaps one of the most famous television criminal lawyers, Saul Goodman. Kuby, who has a background in organized crime and strays far from Burr’s real-world on-stage presence, shows a whole new side to the Grammy-nominated comedian. Although his appearance on the show is brief, Kuby plays a major role in several major plot points: his very first appearance features him impersonating a health inspector, fabricating water contamination in order to force the inexpensive sale of a car wash for use in a complex money-laundering scheme. Later in the series, he is hired to help rob a train of more than 1,000 gallons of chemical substance crucial to the production of methamphetamine, in which he drives a car over a train track to facilitate the complex and illegal operation.
Migs Mayfeld (The Mandalorian)
From playing a character that facilitated one of the most lucrative drug empires in the country to entering the legendary Star Wars universe, Burr stepped into the The Mandalorian series for one of his other most notable roles. Playing Migs Mayfield, a former Imperial Army sharpshooter turned New Republic criminal, Burr’s trademark Boston accent and blunt sarcasm shines through in an otherwise serious, battle-ridden landscape. Mayfield is an extremely talented marksman, and even in the midst of intense shootouts, his sarcastic and smart-mouthed character is an other-wordly interpretation of Bill Burr at his best. Unfortunately, Mayfield’s comedy does not help him when he abandons a prison rescue mission, and his fate ultimately ends in a 50-year prison sentence.
Frank Murphy (F is For Family)
Burr’s talents don’t just translate to acting roles – F is For Family is a cartoon comedy that he co-created, taking the audience back to his childhood in an animated comedy series based on his life and experiences. The show is set in 1970s America, and is widely acclaimed for its portrayal of middle-class family life in the era. Burr is the voice actor for Frank Murphy, a war veteran and working family man who boasts an angry, foul-mouthed personality inspired by a turbulent relationship with his father as a child. Working a manual labor job at the local airport, Murphy lives with his wife, Sue, and three children. He is known for his violent, obscenity-ridden outbursts, and the series follows his character development over five seasons as he learns to separate himself from his childhood trauma as he navigates life as a father.
