Ocean State club can clinch playoff spot with win vs. Loudoun United FC on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m.
HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (Oct. 10, 2026) – A physical, defensive battle in the Motor City ended in a narrow loss for Rhode Island FC on Saturday, who fell 1-0 to Detroit City FC at Keyworth Stadium. Despite the loss, other results around the league went RIFC’s way, meaning the Ocean State club can clinch its third-straight playoff berth with a win vs. Loudoun United FC on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
White the first half involved few clear-cut scoring opportunities for either team, Rhode Island FC (11W-11L-5T) was given an advantage in the 23rd minute when Detroit City FC (14W-6L-8T) goalkeeper Carlos Herrera was shown a straight red card for a foul on forward Osman Foyo at the top of the box.
Detroit, who began the game on the front foot, quickly took a more defensive shape after the dismissal, allowing RIFC to out-shoot it 6-4 through the opening 45 minutes. Despite being down one of the league’s best goalkeepers, the homeside remained resolute, holding the scoreless tie into the halftime break.
Detroit’s resilience paid off in the 56th minute when Kobe Hernández-Foster played Darren Smith into a dangerous position at the top of the 18-yard-box. Smith quickly took the ball onto his right foot, unleashing a curling shot that beat a diving Koke Vegas and fell perfectly into the top-right corner to give the hosts the lead.
Following the goal, Detroit continued to lock it down in the back, limiting RIFC to just one shot on target through the entire game. The lone goal was one of just two shots on target split between the two teams through 90 minutes, which ended 1-0 in favor of Detroit after a tense final phase.
Up next, Rhode Island FC will return to Centreville Bank Stadium for its final two home games of the regular season, beginning when it takes on Loudoun United FC Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. It can officially clinch its third-straight playoff berth with a win against Loudoun, or by earning three points out of its final three games.
