Grit and Glory
Despite its being eliminated from 2026 USL Championship playoff contention, Loudoun United FC has strung together impressive form as it looks to close out the 2026 season on a high note. After picking up its first win in seven games on Sept. 4 in a 4-1 win at Sporting Club Jacksonville, Loudoun has strung together three-straight results in a dramatic return to form at the tail end of the season. The Virginia club enters Wednesday’s matchup after a gritty 2-0 win at Miami FC last time out, blanking the hottest club in the USL Championship and ending Miami’s league-best four-game winning run with a pair of late goals. The week prior, goalkeeper Jordan Farr earned Goal of the Week and Team of the Week honors after scoring a stoppage-time header vs. Indy Eleven, becoming the first goalkeeper in club history to score a goal while helping Loudoun salvage a 1-1 tie.
New Face Between the Sticks
Farr’s impressive performance vs. Indy Eleven caught the attention of Major League Soccer side DC United, who promptly recalled the shot-stopper from his season-long loan. In Farr’s absence, backup Ethan Bandré returned between the sticks for Loudoun, re-taking the starting spot for the first time since Sept. 5 and making his 16th appearance of the season. Bandré did not skip a beat in his return to action, posting his fifth 5+ save performance of the season and keeping his sixth shutout of the year to deny Miami what would have been a fifth-straight win. The goalkeeper will look to carry that momentum into another tough environment on the road, where he has recorded 30 of his 49 saves on the season and kept three clean sheets.
Dominant Davis
Eddie Davis III has been a standout for Loudoun late in the season, logging eight goals in just 10 appearances since joining the club on loan from MLS side Philadelphia Union in August. The 20-year-old forward scored a brace to lift Loudoun over Miami FC last time out, tallying his third multi-goal outing in his last six appearances. After holding off 16 Miami shots throughout the game, Davis opened the scoring with just five minutes to play in regulation, and added a second in the seventh minute of stoppage time to secure a resolute road win for Loudoun. Both goals stemmed from impressive solo runs, showing off Davis’ speed, agility and control on the ball.

Win and In
Rhode Island FC can officially book its spot in the 2026 USL Championship playoffs on Wednesday with a win against Loudoun, and has the opportunity to clinch earlier than it ever has before with three regular-season games remaining. A win is not only necessary to clinch playoffs outright, but also to keep RIFC in the fight for its first-ever home playoff game, with five teams fighting for two remaining top-four positions. Two of Rhode Island FC’s final three opponents, Hartford Athletic and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, are also competing for the final home playoff spot, making RIFC’s final three games absolutely vital in determining its place in the final Eastern Conference standings.
Spreading the Wealth
Prior to Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Detroit City FC, RIFC had strung together two-straight wins for the third time this season to put it on the brink of clinching the playoffs. Stas Korzeniowski, Amos Shapiro-Thompson, Karfia Yao and Nick Scardina all scored in the club’s wins vs. Indy Eleven (1-0) and at Brooklyn FC (3-1), setting the stage for an exciting home stretch. Seven of RIFC’s last eleven goals have included contributions from RIFC’s trio of midseason acquisitions, with Yutaro Tsukada, Korzeniowski and Osman Foyo combining for nine goal contributions in RIFC’s last nine games since Aug. 22.
For the Recordbooks
Prior to the 2026 season, Rhode Island FC was winless in its first four meetings vs. Loudoun United FC (0W-1L-3T), with three of its first four meetings finishing scoreless. The Ocean State club flipped that narrative on its head in June, cruising to a 4-1 win in Loudoun and picking up its first-ever win vs. the Virginia Club. The statement victory marked the club’s second-largest road win of all time, and continued a streak of explosive offense that saw the club score 11 goals in just four games. The game also marked just the fifth time in club history that multiple substitutes have scored goals, with Leo Afonso and Dwayne Atkinson complementing a list of four different goalscorers that found the back of the net in the win. RIFC will look to replicate June’s emphatic victory on Wednesday, which would see it officially clinch the playoffs in front of the home fans for the first time.
