Playoff Bound
With a 3-1 win against Brooklyn FC on Sept. 30, Detroit City FC officially clinched its playoff ticket, becoming the third Eastern Conference club to lock in its postseason berth in 2026. The club has continued its success since joining the USL Championship in 2022, making the playoffs in each of its first five seasons. The statement win in Brooklyn marked the earliest Detroit has clinched a playoff berth in the club’s history. Detroit’s 13W-6L-8T record this season is the second best in the Eastern Conference, and with just three games left on the season, the lowest Detroit City can finish in the standings is sixth. The hosts will look to continue a four-game unbeaten streak as the push for a top-four home playoff spot continues.
Scoring Success
While Detroit has relied on its defense to secure points this season, Darren Smith has become the offensive identity for Le Rouge. Smith has amassed 23 regular season goals in two seasons with the club, leading the team both years. The South African forward is also a USL Championship record-holder, netting five goals in Detroit’s 6-2 victory over Sporting Jacksonville on June 13 to tie the USL Championship single-game goal record. He ranks third overall in the USL Championship this season with 13 goals. Smith has found success against RIFC in the past, scoring both of Detroit’s goals in a 2-0 win in his first appearance against the Ocean State club on April 19, 2025. However, Rhode Island FC has held Smith scoreless through the last two matchups between the two clubs.
Defensive Dominance
Detroit City FC enters the contest as one of the strongest defensive sides in the USL Championship. Detroit has allowed just 20 goals in 27 games, powered by a backline that thrives in limiting scoring chances. Detroit City FC boasts the second-lowest save total at 56 this season, with goalkeeper Carlos Herrera handling 53 of those shots. However, even with the lesser work load, Herrera has been exceptional in goal for the club, securing a league-leading 13 clean sheets in 25 appearances. His performance between the pipes has elevated Detroit’s team save percentage to 75 percent, a top-three mark in the league. Rhode Island FC witnessed that defensive poise in full force the last time it met Detroit, when the two clubs battled to a 0-0 tie on April 19. Recently, that defensive success has been front and center, with Detroit conceding just three goals in nine games since Aug. 8, posting a 5W-1L-4T during that span.

Playoff Push
A vital 3-1 victory over Brooklyn FC Wednesday could not come at a better time for Rhode Island FC as the race to clinch a playoff spot continues. After its last two wins, RIFC holds an 11W-10L-5T record in the regular season, sitting sixth in the Eastern Conference standings. The Ocean State club could have a chance to clinch its third-straight postseason appearance on Saturday, given a bit of help from around the conference. If Rhode Island FC is able to capture all three points on the road in Detroit, the squad must look to either Indy Eleven or Miami FC. If Indy loses in its 7 p.m. matchup with the Tampa Bay Rowdies, or Miami drops points in its 7 p.m. matchup to Loudoun United FC, a win would book RIFC’s third-straight ticket to the playoffs.
Team of the Week
A trio of RIFC players were named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 31 following a critical 1-0 victory over Indy Eleven on Wednesday and its commanding win in Brooklyn on Saturday. Defender Frank Nodarse headlined the group with his club-leading fifth selection of the season. Nordarse played all 180 minutes in the club’s two contests, leading the team in passes (90) and accurate passes (52) against Indy and anchoring RIFC’s defense through two games. Defender Karifa Yao and midfielder Amos Shapiro-Thompson were named to the bench after each of them tallied a goal in the first 22 minutes of RIFC’s 3-1 win vs. Brooklyn. Shapiro-Thompson scored an incredible long-range goal to earn his second selection of the season, while Yao earned his first career TOTW selection for the Ocean State club. The trio mark the second time this season that three RIFC players have earned TOTW selections in the same week.
For the Recordbooks
Rhode Island FC and Detroit City FC have split tough battles in the first five all-time matchups between the two clubs, with Rhode Island just trailing Detroit with a record of 1W-2L-2T in head-to-head series. Each game between these two sides has been a defensive battle, with four clean sheets recorded between either club. RIFC’s last time out against Detroit fit that bill, as the two teams combined for a 0-0 tie on April 4 at Centreville Bank Stadium. In 2025, RIFC secured its lone win against Detroit in a 1-0 fight to the finish. Forward Maxi Rodriguez, who spent the 2025 season with RIFC between tenures with Detroit City, scored that lone goal on a penalty kick in a huge win to secure RIFC’s 2025 playoff spot. A heroic outing from goalkeeper Koke Vegas in his return from injury powered the squad to three points following the score. RIFC will head to the Motor City Saturday in search of its first-ever win at Keyworth Stadium, in what will likely be its last-ever trip to the venue with Detroit’s brand-new stadium nearing completion.
